天主教中有七種死罪，然而一場離奇的連環殺人案，受害者都是死於這七宗罪其中的一種。經驗十足的警探Somerset經過不懈的努力，終於將這些看似沒有聯繫的命案屢出頭緒，五樁命案過後，凶手下一個目標是誰？在何處？沒有人可以預見。正當警方不知所措之際，凶手奇跡般的自首了，此時凶手的“七宗罪”還差兩宗，難道他會就此罷手？他又為何會自投羅網？凶手宣稱自己的“偉大傑作”仍會完成，在警方的嚴密看管下，插翅難飛的殺人犯又能做什麼呢？結局大大出乎人的意料。
天主教明言七宗罪：「饕餮」、「貪婪」、「懶惰」、「嫉妒」、「驕傲」、「憤怒」。沙摩塞是承辦凶殺案的資深員警，即將退休，而米爾斯是新手，一付興致高昂，自願請調至這一分局。星期一上午，一件凶殺案發生，凶手在冰箱後寫著「饕餮」，星期二，是一位律師，現場寫著「貪婪」，一天一個，依七宗罪而死。面對此案，沙摩塞心中有諸多掙札，住在這城市已久的他，早已習慣，冷眼看事情，本想不接此案，幾經考慮又留下來幫米爾斯，米爾斯血氣方剛，衝動易怒，故弄玄虛的凶手因而選上他做為七宗罪的最後一人－「憤怒」。強竟殺了米的妻子崔西來激怒他。讓自己成為「嫉妒」，米爾斯成為「憤怒」，強也贏得了這場遊戲。沙可以退休了，但看著囚車中的米爾斯，究竟是社會始終如此不堪，或者天真單純也是一種罪。
