1898年，美國有一位研究詩歌的路易士‧本孫博士（Louis F. Benson）出版了一本書，叫《最佳教會詩歌》（The best church hymns）；他在書中收集了當時的107種詩歌集作統計，根據被收納次數的頻繁度，歸納出當時最廣為基督徒在教會中傳唱的詩歌排行前32名。而，排名第一的，是特普拉狄（A. M. Toplady）的《萬古磐石為我開》，共有106種詩歌集選錄了它。
十九世紀英國國教利物浦教區主教John Charles Ryle在1869出版了一本書《十八世紀的基督徒領袖》（Christian Leaders of the Eighteenth Century）。書中對特普拉狄有這麼一段讚歎：「在所有的英文詩歌作家中，能夠如此徹底成功的將真理、詩詞、生命、溫馨、烈火、莊嚴、和熱情調和在一起的，恐怕只有特普拉狄一人了。」對於Ryle 主教這一段評語，《萬古磐石為我開》堪稱是絕佳範例。而，Saintsbury教授說，這是一首真正偉大的詩每個字、每一句都有它的屬靈意義與神學地位。

Nothing in my hand I bring, Simply to Thy cross I cling;

Naked, come to Thee for dress; Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
污穢，飛奔你泉旁，主阿，洗我，否則亡。
Foul, I to the fountain fly; Wash me, Saviour, or I die!
這是何等情詞懇切的投訴！
