“哈佛圖書館牆上的訓言”開國際玩笑

偽“訓言”是怎樣流傳的 2010年01月27日08:46  來源：《中國青年報》

　　近日，中國青年報記者接到上海市田園高級中學英語教研組組長陳應宏老師的來信，反映部分媒體刊載的“哈佛圖書館牆上的訓言”內容不真實。他擔心，披上“哈佛”外衣的這些原本不存在的“訓言”，會通過其他報紙雜志、互聯網等，以訛傳訛，流傳越來越廣。

　　無中生有的“哈佛圖書館牆上的訓言”

　　“One day，has not been able again to come．”（一天過完，不會再來。）

　　“Studies this matter，lacks the time，but is lacks diligently．”（學習這件事，不是缺乏時間，而是缺乏努力。）

　　如果不是親眼看到這些錯誤頻出的英文版“哈佛圖書館自修室牆上的訓言”，陳應宏恐怕不會想到，他會在某一天與大洋彼岸的哈佛大學圖書館建立聯系。

　　陳應宏在2009年12月初被告知，學校要請廣告公司制作一批中英文對照的標語展板，內容是20句哈佛圖書館牆上的中英文訓言。然而，當發現這些訓言的英文“一塌糊涂”，有的連主語都沒有時，他感到非常意外，並在去年12月14日給哈佛大學圖書館發了一封電子郵件，向其求証是否有這些“訓言”。

　　第二天，哈佛大學圖書館研究館員 Deborah Kelley-Milburn回復了陳應宏的郵件：“已經有很多人就這個問題詢問過我們。我想，這是一個在互聯網上流傳的民間傳說。我們哈佛大學裡的各家圖書館（哈佛大學共有70余家圖書館——記者注）都沒有這類‘訓言’。”

　　他進而求証：哈佛大學的校訓是什麼？結果被告知，哈佛大學的校訓是拉丁文“VERITAS”（即中文“真理”的意思——記者注）。這一校訓與陳應宏提出質疑的那20句所謂的“哈佛圖書館牆上的訓言”顯然大相徑庭。
