這首歌原起自歐美國家勞工階級隨手所哼唱的不完整的旋律. 在1961年一位以斑鳩琴見長的美國民謠女歌手 Hedy West ( 海蒂威斯特 ) 將整首歌的旋律完整架構並填上歌詞. 隨後開始於美國勞工流頌傳唱. 半個多世紀以來唱出了無數漂泊遊子的心聲. 這首歌曲是迄今為止被翻唱次數最多的重唱歌曲. 美國知名歌手幾乎全翻唱過. 這首歌曲是1960年代美國鄉村民謠最傑出代表作. 原唱最為出名的就是Peter, Paul & Mary合唱團. 也是流傳最廣版本. 另外四兄弟樂團(The Brothers Four)的版本也是台灣樂迷非常熟悉的. 2013年美國音樂題材劇情片《醉鄉民謠》將這首歌曲做為主題曲. 再次喚起美國民眾回憶. 令原唱專輯又熱賣一陣子.
